Adrian Miles speaks at the Gloucestershire branch of the Christian Police Association
Jeff Steady reports on a talk given by TWUK's Adrian Miles on 'Handling Stress from a Christian Perspective' to a meeting of the Gloucester Branch of the Christian Police Association on 28th April 2015.
At Dr Adrian Miles’ presentation on stress management yesterday at Gloucester Police HQ, the host’s opening comment was that seeing the room fill up with guests certainly reduced his own stress level.
I think every Christian Workplace Group leader experiences that stress from time to time – the waiting and wondering if anyone will turn up, the fear of embarrassment in front of sceptical colleagues.
But Gloucester Christian Police Association will be rightly delighted with yesterday’s event.
A gathering of approaching 30 people listened to a riveting talk by Adrian, replete with slides, questionnaires and charts.
What impressed me most was the high level of participation. Around 50% of those present engaged in questions and comments. Everyone moved forward when requested, to pinpoint their present position on a stress-motivation curve chart. The exercise indicated a wide spread of experience.
A number of guests were present, and in that context I heard the relevant scriptures, ably handled by Adrian, with fresh ears. Everyone needs to hear this talk.
In the melee of conversation after the close, two guests – one clearly from another faith - asked me personally for one of the ‘police specific’ bibles, not least to seek for a quotation which had captured their imagination: Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? (Or a single cubit to his height?) (Matt: 6.27)
With a wide ranging consideration of the causes and symptoms of stress, together with guidance on remedy, those present can I think consider ourselves better equipped for work life generally. And the Gloucester Police Christian Group can certainly take confidence to move forward to build on this early successful afternoon.
