Bartimaeus demanded his covenant promise
I’m Andy Smith, Ambassador for Transform Work.
Many years ago, a Christian bible teacher gave me some good advice. If, when reading a passage, if you can remove a portion and push the ends together and it does not alter your understanding, then there might be something that is important or even significant you have just missed. An example for me is in Mark 10 which recounts Jesus’ encounter with blind Bartimaeus. In verse 49, Jesus stood still. Why? Bartimaeus had been continually calling out as Jesus approached, drew alongside and was possibly even moving away when Bartimaeus, possibly in desperation, called out “have mercy on me”. This long puzzled me and I was never satisfied with explanations. Then recently, I listened to a study on this passage where it was explained that the translation for the word mercy was a weak one. The original Greek word, eleeo, is the equivalent of the Hebrew word Hesed. Suddenly it made sense. Bartimaeus demanded his covenant promise with Jesus, a demand Jesus had to acknowledge and it made Him stand still. Jesus asks what covenant right Bartimaeus is after – obviously it is sight, but Jesus expects Bartimaeus to vocalise it and he does and his sight is restored.
Bartimaeus demanded his promise under the old covenant. We are under the new covenant with even better promises, so when Hebrews 4:16 tells us to boldly draw near, just how bold are we? If you sense God is directing you to pray for someone in your office, whilst being sensitive, be bold also.

| My career started with a chemistry degree. When choosing a degree, I felt under pressure to do a ‘gap year’ of Christian ministry, as many of my Christian peers were doing this, and it seemed the right thing to do. |
